Why Do I Write This Blog???

The easiest (and probably the most honest) answer to that question is: I don't know. It all started in the summer of 2005, when I went to Crawford, Texas ( a.k.a. the home of the prez's ranch, a.k.a. the home of Camp Casey) to support Cindy Sheehan. I wanted the world to know that, contrary to what one could read in the mainstream media, the peace movement was alive and well and large numbers of Americans did not support the war in Iraq. I wanted people to know that thousands of Americans were willing to travel to Texas and tolerate the heat, humidity, and bugs in order to support a grieving mother whose new purpose was to shine a light on the lies that led to the war and to bring home our troops so that no other mother would have to know the pain that she felt.

Over time, this blog has become more of an exploration of who I am, my spirituality, and how life works. I love life's complexities, exploring the shades of gray. I want to, as Rainier Maria Rilke said,

"Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer."

Maybe my blog is just one big question about what is needed in order for people to take the time to love and cherish each other and our earth. Maybe someday, I will "live along some distant day into the answer."

In the meantime, thank you for joining me on my journey. I welcome you to share yours with me

Thursdays with TJ

On Thursday mornings, TJ and I explore NonViolent Communication together. I took Marshall Rosenberg's workshop a few years ago, but I have not come close to mastering NVC. In fact, it is a rare and exceptional moment when I remember and am able to sink down into those useful skills that Marshall can so easily demonstrate.

Having TJ for a practice partner has helped me to realize that NVC is more than the skill of communicating in a prescribed way. NVC is helping me to understand myself and others better.

The vision of the Center for NonViolent Communication:

The Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) is a global organization whose vision is a world where all people are getting their needs met and resolving their conflicts peacefully. In this vision, people are using Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to create and participate in networks of worldwide life-serving systems in economics, education, justice, healthcare, and peace-keeping.

At the end of the hour that TJ and I spend exploring NVC, I feel encouraged, alive, and grateful because I know that I am learning skills that will help bring peace to my life and, hopefully, to others in my world.

The NVC walks I take with Carol help me fulfill a need I have for integrity. It brings a greater authenticity to my peace work. This brings joy and renewed passion to my walk with nonviolence.

How can I truly contribute to peace if I am speaking a language that does violence? Nonviolent communication goes beyond the words I choose to say. It touches at the very need for such words, and helps me connect with the root feelings that are connected to this need.

I have a spiritual need for unity, harmony, and nonviolent order. When this need is met, even for a moment, I feel freedom, hope, and inspiration…

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Prayer of St. Francis

I am so happy we have created our NVC walks where I am supported and accepted (and given the opportunity to offer the same) as I try on some new skills and come to a new awareness of myself.

Thank you, TJ!
