Why Do I Write This Blog???

The easiest (and probably the most honest) answer to that question is: I don't know. It all started in the summer of 2005, when I went to Crawford, Texas ( a.k.a. the home of the prez's ranch, a.k.a. the home of Camp Casey) to support Cindy Sheehan. I wanted the world to know that, contrary to what one could read in the mainstream media, the peace movement was alive and well and large numbers of Americans did not support the war in Iraq. I wanted people to know that thousands of Americans were willing to travel to Texas and tolerate the heat, humidity, and bugs in order to support a grieving mother whose new purpose was to shine a light on the lies that led to the war and to bring home our troops so that no other mother would have to know the pain that she felt.

Over time, this blog has become more of an exploration of who I am, my spirituality, and how life works. I love life's complexities, exploring the shades of gray. I want to, as Rainier Maria Rilke said,

"Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer."

Maybe my blog is just one big question about what is needed in order for people to take the time to love and cherish each other and our earth. Maybe someday, I will "live along some distant day into the answer."

In the meantime, thank you for joining me on my journey. I welcome you to share yours with me

A Call To Your Conscience

It was a beautiful (and hot) day for a rally yesterday. Almost 600 people signed up to join in the rally against the genocide in Darfur. As we listened to speakers and music, others in the park played volleyball, sunbathed.... and flew a kite.

These two young women are 8th graders from a Jewish school in Denver. They have done impressive work to help the people from Darfur. They raised a few thousand dollars and they have worked with the Colorado legislature to pass a bill to divest from Darfur. Colorado was the 10th state to pass legislation requiring us to divest our funds from companies who do business with Sudan. Click here to find out what your state is doing about this.

From the Save Darfur website:

"Darfur has been embroiled in a deadly conflict for over three years. At least 400,000 people have been killed; more than 2 million innocent civilians have been forced to flee their homes and now live in displaced-persons camps in Sudan or in refugee camps in neighboring Chad; and more than 3.5 million men, women, and children are completely reliant on international aid for survival. Not since the Rwandan genocide of 1994 has the world seen such a calculated campaign of displacement, starvation, rape, and mass slaughter."

We were asked to write to our legislators and the Prez, divest our personal funds from the Sudan, and bring awareness to others (now you can't say that you didn't know about this!).

Did you know that Fidelity invests in companies that help fund the genocide in Darfur?

And did you know that China is not only destroying the culture of Tibet, but they are also supporting the Darfur genocide? See this article from the Brookings Institute: Calling on China: The China-Darfur Connection

Question: Do you think that it is possible for our world to be a loving, peaceful place? Or do you think that people are innately power-hungry and violent? Your comments on this blog are welcome.

I think it can be done, but not in the present state.

Looks like a good rally!

Yes indeed Carol!
We can *certainly* make this beautiful little planet into a more 'loving and peaceful place', ~ but it will not happen overnight.

We should never underestimate what we are up against - the collective power of centuries of ingrained (morbid!) thinking. Old and bad habits are hard to break -both in ourselves, as well on the wider, social front.

However, that is no reason to ever give up.
We who have the vision to carry through **that which we came to this life to succeed in**, have to ensure we support each other in our(collective) vision and purpose, and to 'keep on keeping on' until we draw our very last breath.

In this manner we will recieve very few accolades from any government dept, (!) but we will certainly hear a few cheers in higher, more heavenly realms, --after all, what we are about has the 'approval of angels' - if not that graveyard known as the White House! ;)

With love,
Yan (UK)

Thank you both for your comments. Otowi, I am guessing that I know where you're coming from. From what I know of Islam, I can understand what needs to happen in order for our world to become the peaceful, loving place that I dream of.

Yan, I really hear ya, and I have one question: how do you know that we came to this life "to succeed" in our vision? Not saying you are wrong, just wondering how you know? I don't know anything, so just wondering...

Dear Carol,
You have a most admirable frankness and humility! :)

As to 'how do I know', well, it's a bit like, 'How do I know I'm human and made of blood, flesh and boney bits? ...' ~ it just kind of IS in me, --runs through me like the words in a stick of rock (candy).

It's hard to explain, ... but I think I said something hereabouts about the 'heart knowing stuff' ~ if our hearts are operating properly, then we can sorta 'know stuff' in that way...

Also, -my spiritual teachers talk of how a whole generation of us (about your / my age) came into incarnation to try to 'make a difference' and when I heard that, it fitted my innate feeelings on the matter.

Hope that helps to elucidate a little?

xx

Yan
