Why Do I Write This Blog???

The easiest (and probably the most honest) answer to that question is: I don't know. It all started in the summer of 2005, when I went to Crawford, Texas ( a.k.a. the home of the prez's ranch, a.k.a. the home of Camp Casey) to support Cindy Sheehan. I wanted the world to know that, contrary to what one could read in the mainstream media, the peace movement was alive and well and large numbers of Americans did not support the war in Iraq. I wanted people to know that thousands of Americans were willing to travel to Texas and tolerate the heat, humidity, and bugs in order to support a grieving mother whose new purpose was to shine a light on the lies that led to the war and to bring home our troops so that no other mother would have to know the pain that she felt.

Over time, this blog has become more of an exploration of who I am, my spirituality, and how life works. I love life's complexities, exploring the shades of gray. I want to, as Rainier Maria Rilke said,

"Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer."

Maybe my blog is just one big question about what is needed in order for people to take the time to love and cherish each other and our earth. Maybe someday, I will "live along some distant day into the answer."

In the meantime, thank you for joining me on my journey. I welcome you to share yours with me

The End Of The Road

We have watered them, loved them, wooed them, , covered them with warm blankets, and BEGGED them to PULLLEEEESE ripen. But I admit defeat. It is just too cold to ask them to perform the impossible. So today, I picked about 100 green tomatoes to add to the 30 or 40 that I had previously picked up off the ground and brought in.

And I made a fried green tomato for the first time. It was okay. I wouldn't crave another one, but I wouldn't pass it up if I was hungry, either. I've found a few different variations on how to make them. This was trial #1 and I still have about 139 green tomatoes for further experiments.

And there's always Green Tomato Cake, Green Tomato Raspberry Jam, Indian Style Green Tomatoes and Vegetables Over Rice,...

I've thought about trying fried green tomatoes. Probably something about the movie. :) The ones you made look great. Maybe I'll be able to try that soon.

It's hard to imagine what you are going to do with all those tomatoes! :)

What about Green Tomato Chutney? There are lots of recipes if you Google - but here's one by Nigella (haven't tried it though - normally make apple chutney from Clive's Mum's recipe)

I'm in the same boat!
Thanks for a great laugh [final photo] AND for the recipes. I'll give them serious consideration.

Love your tomato portrait--the first photo.

I love fried green tomatoes! I often feel terribly out of place here in the South, but green tomatoes is one topic my neighbors and I can agree on!

Chani,

I'm going to put most of the tomatoes in bags and newspapers so that they'll "ripen". Tomatoes that have turned red that way are not the greatest, but they're okay in a salad.

I'd be interested in hearing what you think of fried green tomatoes if you ever get a chance to taste them.

Dancing,

I have never been a chutney fan. I guess that I could make it as a gift for others, though...

Otowi,

It sure is a lot of tomatoes! I'm going to put most in bags in a cool place so they can turn red. I hope that they do it in stages, not all at once!

Thomas,

If we lived near each other, I'd perfect my fried green tomato recipe and make LOTS of them for you.
