Why Do I Write This Blog???

The easiest (and probably the most honest) answer to that question is: I don't know. It all started in the summer of 2005, when I went to Crawford, Texas ( a.k.a. the home of the prez's ranch, a.k.a. the home of Camp Casey) to support Cindy Sheehan. I wanted the world to know that, contrary to what one could read in the mainstream media, the peace movement was alive and well and large numbers of Americans did not support the war in Iraq. I wanted people to know that thousands of Americans were willing to travel to Texas and tolerate the heat, humidity, and bugs in order to support a grieving mother whose new purpose was to shine a light on the lies that led to the war and to bring home our troops so that no other mother would have to know the pain that she felt.

Over time, this blog has become more of an exploration of who I am, my spirituality, and how life works. I love life's complexities, exploring the shades of gray. I want to, as Rainier Maria Rilke said,

"Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer."

Maybe my blog is just one big question about what is needed in order for people to take the time to love and cherish each other and our earth. Maybe someday, I will "live along some distant day into the answer."

In the meantime, thank you for joining me on my journey. I welcome you to share yours with me

Treated Like Royalty

I think that I have won two prizes in my life - in addition to my hubby, son and daughter and this amazing experience of life that I breathe in every day. But I'm talking here about the kind of prizes that you win when your name is pulled in a drawing. I won $50 at a bar in 1988, and a couple of weeks ago, I won my second prize: gifts from Dancing On A Blade Of Grass who lives across the ocean in England.

Whoo hoooo! This second prize was the best!

In my mailbox Friday night, I received my first ever ROYAL MAIL!

And inside the package, I found a Royal dishcloth (hand knitted by Dancing herself), a Royal bathroom sign, and a very cool Royal calendar with wonderful photos. I KNOW this calendar is royal, because it has all kinds of holidays in it that I've never heard of. There are holidays that are just called, "Holiday". I LOVE that! Who needs a reason? (Besides, we've forgotten the reason we began most holidays, anyway.)

Thank you, Dancing! You did a beautiful job knitting the dishcloth and picking out lovely gifts. I will think of you often as I use them.

You are VERY welcome and I'm pleased that you are feeling so regal. Not sure that HRH would use a knitted dishcloth though.

It's odd looking at your photo of something I packed and posted this time last week!

I loved the calendar too and couldn't resist popping it in. As far as the extra holidays are concerned, now you'll be able to have a Boxing Day!

The 2 holidays in May are Spring Bank Holidays - we used to only have just the one but the May Day holiday was added some years ago (it's the Monday nearest to 1 May).

Boxing Day: From Wikipedia "The Oxford English Dictionary attributes it to the Christmas box; the verb box meaning: "To give a Christmas-box (colloq.); hence the term boxing-day." The date coincides with the Feast of St. Stephen.

It was the day when people would give a present or Christmas box to those who had worked for them throughout the year.
In England many years ago, it was common practice for the servants to carry boxes to their employers when they arrived for their day's work on the day after Christmas. Their employers would then put coins in the boxes as special end-of-year gifts. This can be compared with the modern day concept of Christmas bonuses. The servants carried boxes for the coins, hence the name Boxing Day."
and
" Boxing Day in the UK is traditionally a day for sporting activity, originally fox hunting, but as this is now banned, alternative hunts take place. Football, horse racing and Rugby (both codes) are also played."

Hope this helps!

I love being English, we are so complex and yet not!
How lovely of DOABOG! That calander looks brilliant! I might try and get myself one!
Did you know that England have very close to the lowest amount of Bank Hols in Europe! We need another holiday day! Why not have a 'Holiday'! Darn good idea I think!

I am envious, Carol. That dishcloth looks so soft. And hand-knitted by the giver--that is special! The bathroom sign is clever and the calendar will provide enjoyment every day of the year.

I'm with you. Who needs a reason for a holiday?

Dancing,

I think that you guys just wanted another day after Christmas in order to spread out the fun. :-)

Daffy,

I love you being English, too! I would try to be English myself, but it's more fun to be on the outside enjoying the Englishness of you guys.

Please, though, tell the person in charge that you need another holiday just because!

San,

Aren't they all great! I cannot NOT think of Dancing every day!

What day should you and I pick for a new national holiday? Maybe we need at least two - your birthday and mine.
